Event Type

A celebration of Black music, history and legacy. We begin with Bronzeville where American cabaret was created and flourished more than 100 years ago along the famous “Stroll”.

Black Songbook, Vol. I: Bronzeville invites the audience to spend one night on Chicago’s South Side, experiencing Bronzeville through its music, nightlife, people, stories, and cultural legacy. Singers Sheran Goodspeed Keyton and Terrence Patrick Davis serve as our guides along with an ensemble of Charles Anderson, Ava Logan, Kenesha Reed, Suzie Telep, R. Darryl Thomas, Patricia Tyson, and Gene Williams. We share a night on the town— from dusk when the city comes alive, moving through the clubs, blues, jazz, relationships, laughter, and late-night conversations of Bronzeville until the intimate and reflective minutes before dawn. Eventually morning arrives, but Bronzeville’s story and influence continue. The Bronzeville volume is conceived and directed by Carmen Bell (managing director of Black Voices in Cabaret) with Theodis Rodgers, Jr. as music director and pianist.
